TRAINING

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to pedal! We conduct 3 volunteer training sessions: Spring, Summer, and Fall. If you would like to be a part of our next training session please e-mail darcy(at)nantucketwheelers.org  Before engaging in training, please be advised that you will need to commit to at least one 2.5 hour volunteer slot/week. See Volunteer Calendar for details.

To ensure the safety and peace of mind of our passengers and their families, becoming a certified volunteer entails the following:

In order to become a certified volunteer, all candidates must:

1. Be at least 21 years of age.

2. Pass a background check.  After your first training session, you will be sent a link to the application. Applicants will be disqualified if they have any criminal records, sex offenses, and/or repeated motor vehicle violations in their report.

3. Sign an original copy of the Nantucket Wheelers Waiver Agreement . This form will be provided at your first training session.

4. Read the User Manuals and RULES OF THE ROAD

5. Log a total of 6 hours of  road time (as both a pedaler and passenger) with one of our trained volunteers. There will be a log book on location, which must be signed by the trainer after each session.  Prior to certification, no one may take out a passenger other than a trainer or another volunteer. Wheelchair bikes must travel in a group of at least 2 bikes. Single wheelchair bikes must be accompanied by a third person riding a bicycle.

6. Satisfactorily perform all skills on the checklist:

The Nantucket Wheelers Volunteer Training Checklist is used to insure that all personnel who will be riding have had training and are able to complete each skill as it pertains to operating the wheelchair bike. The wheelchair bike staff training reviews all parts of operating the bike, using the checklist to insure all parts are covered. Verbal instructions should be followed by demonstration.  In turn, each trainee should practice all functions of the bike and demonstrate them to the trainer.  Trainers check off areas of training when they feel trainees are competent.  All trainees should practice with riders until they feel conformable with the handling of the bike. When trainees have shown competence in all areas of the staff-training sheet, the sheet is signed and dated by the trainer and kept on file with Nantucket Wheelers, LLC.

Non-Family members must also:

8. Submit 3 local references to Nantucket Wheelers, attention: Darcy Creech at darcy(at)nantucketwheelers.org

Once all requirements are satisfactorily met, qualified volunteers will be listed on the Nantucket Wheelers Approved List of Volunteers (see Calendar Page).
