TRAINING

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to pedal! If you would like to participate in training, please sign up here: www.signupgenius.com/go/5080e4dabab2da0fc1-spring2

Prior to signing up for training, please note that you will need to commit to at least one 2.5 hour volunteer slot/week. 2019 ride times are Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:15-11:30 and Tuesdays from 1:15-3:30.

To ensure the safety and peace of mind of our passengers and their families, becoming a certified volunteer entails the following:

In order to become a certified volunteer, all candidates must:

1. Be at least 21 years of age.

2. Fill out the Nantucket Wheelers Volunteer Packet 2019 and submit to Taylor Hilst, Activities Director at Our Island Home. thilst(at)nantucket-ma.gov

3. Pass a background check.  After your first training session, you will be sent a link to the application. Applicants will be disqualified if they have any criminal records, sex offenses, and/or repeated motor vehicle violations in their report.

4. Sign an original copy of the Nantucket Wheelers Waiver Agreement . This form will be provided at your first training session. Please bring this signed form with you at your first training session and give to the days ‘Captain.’

5. Familiarize yourself with the NANTUCKET WHEELERS RULES OF THE ROAD 2019

6. Log a total of 3 sessions (6 total hours as a pedaler and a passenger) with our trained volunteers. There will be a log book on location, which must be signed by the trainer after each session.  Prior to certification, no one may take out a passenger other than a trainer or another volunteer. Wheelchair bikes must travel in a group of at least 2 bikes. Single wheelchair bikes must be accompanied by a third person riding a bicycle.

7. Satisfactorily perform all skills on the checklist:

The Nantucket Wheelers Volunteer Training Checklist is used to insure that all personnel who will be riding have had training and are able to complete each skill as it pertains to operating the wheelchair bike. The wheelchair bike staff training reviews all parts of operating the bike, using the checklist to ensure all parts are covered. Verbal instructions should be followed by a demonstration.  In turn, each trainee should practice all functions of the bike and demonstrate them to the trainer.  Trainers check off areas of training when they feel trainees are competent.  All trainees should practice with riders until they feel conformable with the handling of the bike. When trainees have shown competence in all areas of the staff-training sheet, the sheet is signed and dated by the trainer and kept on file with Nantucket Wheelers, LLC.

With heartfelt thanks,
